So Netflix just dropped this new series called "American Murder: Gabby Petito" - it's three episodes diving into all the latest stuff about the case. You know how this case blew up in the media, right? And yeah, it did spark that important conversation about how missing white women get tons of coverage while minorities don't. So true.
Anyway, here's my little behind-the-scenes experience! I actually got to work on this case - can you believe it? I was lighting interviews for 60 Minutes Australia. Pretty wild being that close to a story everyone was talking about.
We interviewed Brian Etin who totally got his big break covering this story. We met him at this Marriott in West Palm Beach to set up his first interview. Talk about being at the right place at the right time for his career!
After that, we packed everything up and headed over to Venice airport. Brian needed to catch a helicopter to fly over Myakka State Park where they were hunting for Brian Laundrie. That's when things got interesting...
So get this - we accidentally walked right onto the tarmac without permission! We just strolled through the main office with all our gear and nobody stopped us, so we figured, "Hey, must be fine!" Wrong.
Next thing you know, there's this guy running toward us yelling "WTF are you doing!" Apparently the airport is super strict because of 9/11 connections - some pilots supposedly trained there, so now the press is always trying to film. Drama!
I still managed to grab some footage of my buddy Nate filming the helicopter takeoff literally seconds before we got kicked out. Talk about cutting it close!
We also shot Brian doing his segment outside Myakka State Park. You can actually check out the final interviews on 60 Minutes Australia's YouTube - I put the link below if you want to see how it all turned out.
The craziest part? Just a few weeks later, we ended up working on the Jeffrey Epstein case too! 2021 was wild, let me tell you.
